Ericsson’s Sweet Slice of 5G

Updated: May 24, 2021

In a world where over-complication seems to have become the norm, particularly in technology sectors, it’s refreshing to hear the word ‘Simple’ being used to describe something that is set to be so transformative for so many.

Ericsson’s exuberance at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) was almost tangible. From their initial opening keynote speech to their many demonstrations and use case stories, it’s clear that Ericsson stand tall on the innovation pedestal and aren’t afraid to shout about it!

Opening up Networks for Innovation

As networks make the switch from 4G to 5G, there is a clear need to open them up for innovation and ensure that time-to-market for new functionalities is reduced.

Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Cloud Core allows for the flexible evolution of a 4G Core network to a combined 4G and 5G network, while maintaining cost efficiency. It does this by combining 3GPP network functions from EPC and 5GC architectures with a common cloud native software platform to support 5G NR Stand-Alone (SA) and Non-Standalone (NSA), 4G, 3G and 2G technologies.

Ericsson states that “This power combination delivers high levels of orchestration and automation for operational efficiency” and, having seen their offering, I have to agree.

Giving Service Providers the Control they Need

By employing the dual-mode solution, service providers will have the control needed to migrate to 5G at their own pace.

And, actively supporting this is the Ericsson Dynamic Orchestration solution, which automates the network slices required to dramatically reduce the time needed to provide new services – in many cases, from weeks down to just hours.

It’s a sweet solution indeed, allowing two generations to optimise their performance side by side through one core.

This power combination delivers high levels of orchestration and automation for operational efficiency.

Embracing Partnership Opportunities

Operational Expenditure (OPEX) and inefficiencies are dealt with through simplified automations across all platforms, whilst customisable network slicing offers open API capabilities that embrace future partnership opportunities.

And then there’s the innovation potential!

With this kind of open API architecture, 5G enabled network slicing and edge computing provide a great platform for new innovations and enhanced revenue streams.

It’s a win-win situation for both operators and partner organisations.

Ericsson’s solutions for network evolution to 5G Core provide a powerful way for operators to draw more value from both existing and emerging ecosystems. They have managed to simplify complex issues and they aren’t afraid to answer tough questions from the industry, finding the answers that are needed through easy to understand and managed solutions that, ultimately, just work!

In this, all too often, bitter world of technology confusion, it doesn’t get sweeter than that!
